What You Will Do

As the AI Librarian, you will serve a dual role: developing advanced technological workflows for the library and providing instructional support across the campus. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • AI Integration: Developing and implementing AI-driven solutions for library operations, including metadata generation, workflow automation, and custom chatbots.
  • Instruction & Outreach: Designing robust educational tutorials, offering in-person and online workshops, and training students and faculty on AI software applications.
  • Student Leadership: Overseeing university student developers who provide research computing services, custom scripting, and coding support.
  • Subject Area Expertise: Serving as the primary STEM liaison, coordinating AI activities, and supporting locally run generative AI models (like Ollama) for advanced academic research.

What You Need to Succeed

The University Libraries team requires a highly adaptable and technical problem-solver. To qualify for this Assistant or Associate Professor rank, you must possess:

  • Education: A Master’s degree in Library & Information Sciences (from an ALA-accredited institution) or a doctoral degree in a relevant STEM/quantitative field.
  • Programming Skills: Hands-on experience with Python and scientific computing libraries (NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn). Familiarity with R, C++, or MATLAB is a plus.
  • AI & Data Expertise: Strong knowledge of the AI/ML landscape, including natural language processing, generative AI, and model frameworks.
  • Technical Environments: Experience managing Linux-based research computing environments, version control systems, and containers.
  • Academic Commitment: The ability to conduct independent research, publish scholarship, and pursue grant-writing opportunities to meet tenure requirements.
