What You Will Do

As the Web Director, you will report directly to the Associate Chair of Finance & Administration. You will act as the primary architect and manager for the department’s digital presence. Your key daily responsibilities will include:

  • Website Leadership: Leading the development, maintenance, and content strategy for 100+ divisional, center, and lab websites.
  • Technical Development: Using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP to build out complex web applications and ensure seamless front-end and back-end functionality.
  • SEO & Analytics: Implementing data-driven Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies and utilizing tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console to track and boost user engagement.
  • Security & Accessibility: Ensuring all digital content meets strict WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards (ADA compliance) and managing web security protocols like firewalls and data encryption.
  • Project Management: Utilizing tools like Asana or Jira to simultaneously plan, execute, and track multiple web redesigns and marketing initiatives.

What You Need to Succeed

The Department of Surgery is a fast-paced, high-profile environment. UCSF is looking for a seasoned digital communications professional who meets the following criteria:

  • Experience: 5+ years of related web development and digital communication experience.
  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or equivalent training/experience).
  • Technical Stack: Advanced proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and modern Content Management Systems (specifically Drupal).
  • Design Skills: Strong ability to implement UX/UI design principles to create highly intuitive and visually appealing user interfaces.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong political acumen to mediate digital strategy conflicts, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with medical faculty, researchers, and staff.
